DoorKing Keypad & Intercom Repair: The Camarillo Owner’s Guide

A DoorKing keypad or intercom repair in Camarillo typically runs $185 to $480 installed, depending on whether we’re rebuilding the existing keypad, replacing a failing circuit board, or swapping in a new OEM unit. We keep DoorKing-compatible keypads and intercom modules on the truck for most common models, so same-day repair is usually possible when we’re already in Camarillo. The way owners usually discover the failure: the keypad beeps but the gate won’t open, the intercom crackles and drops the connection, or the buttons work only after being pressed three or four times. By the time someone calls us, they’ve usually reset the breaker and re-entered their code twice.

Which DoorKing Models This Applies To

DoorKing has used three main keypad/intercom generations across the last 25 years, and the part number matters more than the age. The older 1800 and 1810 series telephones, the 1830 multiplex systems, the 1835 and 1837 access controllers, and the newer 2120 and 9150 entry systems all use different keypad matrices and different intercom wiring. Look for a model number printed on the control board inside the cabinet (usually starting with 80, 18, or 21), not on the weatherproof housing outside. On the keypad, measure the faceplate: 4.75 inches wide means the older 1812 keypad, while the newer compact keypad is closer to 3.25 inches.

We’re an independent service provider and not affiliated with DoorKing. That independence matters when parts are discontinued, because we don’t have to wait on a supply chain or tell you to replace a whole system over one failed keypad. For older models where a genuine DoorKing faceplate is no longer manufactured, we keep clean OEM pulls and function-tested aftermarket equivalents on the shelf. On any DoorKing aftermarket part, we check the wiring harness pinout before we install it. A keypad that looks identical but carries a different matrix code will light up and never send the right relay signal.

Signs Your DoorKing Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing

Signs Your DoorKing Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing
  • Keys respond only after repeated force. The keypad circuit board sits behind a thin rubber membrane, and once that membrane starts delaminating, the carbon contacts lose their connection. In Camarillo’s steady sun, that membrane hardens faster than it does in coastal fog, so we replace more of them than anything else.
  • The gate opens from the inside release but not from the keypad. That tells us the relay inside the DoorKing keypad is no longer closing. We can usually test this at the board with a meter rather than guessing.
  • Callers hear buzzing or static at the gate, or you can’t hear them at all. The intercom circuit’s power supply is often the cause, and it’s a replaceable component. Or the speaker cone itself has split from heat.
  • One entire row or column of buttons is dead. This is the keypad matrix failing, not an individual button. The fix is a new keypad board or a rebuilt unit, not a cleaning.
  • The keypad lights up but never beeps. The controller inside the keypad has partly failed. Sometimes it resets after a full power cycle, but if we see it twice on the same visit, we recommend replacing the unit.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For Camarillo homeowners, a complete DoorKing keypad replacement with the new OEM unit and wiring work lands between $295 and $480 installed. A simpler intercom speaker or power transformer repair can be $185 to $275. The range comes down to three things: which DoorKing generation you have, whether the unit in the field is the one that failed or the control board inside the cabinet, and how much of the old wiring is salvageable.

Every quote is written and handed to you before we touch a screwdriver, with the part number and the labor as separate line items. If we find hidden damage once the faceplate comes off, we stop and show you a photograph. No surprise invoice at the end. The new part carries its manufacturer’s warranty, and our labor is covered for one year under the 365-Day Done Right Promise. Before we leave, you get a photo log of what we found, what we set, and what we installed.

DIY or Call Us?

DIY or Call Us?

DoorKing keypads run low voltage, so there’s no electrocution risk like a panel or a high-tension spring repair. The honest split: what you can safely check is the power supply and the wire connections at the keypad itself. Look for loose spade connectors, a corroded wire nut, or a transformer that’s hot to the touch. The part where DIY goes wrong is ordering the wrong generation faceplate or keypad matrix, then wiring it in and burning the controller board on the wrong voltage. We get that call once a month. It always costs more than our original estimate would have. If you’d rather skip the trial-and-error, call (805) 516-0855 and we’ll match the part to your board before we schedule anything.
